Peachtree City, Ga, April 18, 2018 – Albany State University defended their championship title in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Golf Championship on Wednesday at the Flat Creek Golf Course, finishing the three-day event at the top of the field with a score of 987.
The Golden Rams earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships. The regional tournament is scheduled for May 8-9th.
Tyler Hanson, all-tournament MVP, was the 11-hole leader and took home the individual title after shooting a 1-over 73 on Tuesday. The Albany native was the only golfer on the field to shoot in the 70s in all three rounds.
The All-Tournament Team consisted of one player from six of the seven institutions that were represented on the leaderboard.
Kentucky State’s Joseph White finished second with 237 trailing Hanson by 11. LeMoyne-Owen’s Karim Muhammad, the 11-hole leader, finished third in the overall field with 238.
Tommy Swearinger of Morehouse fired 81 today after finishing with 80 in the first two rounds to finish with 241.
Benedict’s Sam Smith secured his fifth place finish after shooting 6-over 78. Timothy Simpson of Miles College rounded out the all-tournament team selections in sixth place after placing eight in the first round.
Gary Hilton was named Outstanding Coach of the Tournament after leading Albany State to a repeating SIAC Golf Championship title.
Behind Albany State, Miles College finished second in team standings with 1000, while Benedict finished third with 48-over 1005 and Morehouse captured fourth with 1030.
Kentucky State (1051), LeMoyne-Owen (1056), and Paine (1236) rounded out the seven-team field.
