On February 7th, 2022 an instant classic took place in HPER Complex. The Albany State Golden Rams improved their record to 8-14 by holding on to defeat Savannah State 58-55 , in a game that came down to the wire! Ultimately it was the team effort that would push Albany State through the finish line shooting 54 % from the field. Albany State was dialed in from the tip-off , led by junior forward Jordan Simpson , who had a team-high 17 points which included a posterizing dunk. The Rams also benefited from the help of several other key contributors such as junior guard Malik Parker who chipped in 11 points and freshmen guard Maxwell Harris who added 9 points of his own to help defeat the Tigers.
The Golden Rams would ran away early in the game, being the more dialed-in team from the tip, but Savannah State had no quit in them ,fighting all the way to the end. The Tigers were led by guard Marcus Scott who had a game-high 24 points which included a huge buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the first half , that cut the Albany State lead from six points down to three going into halftime. Although Scott had it going the rest of the Tigers just couldn’t heat up , shooting just 38.8 % from the field. The next two highest scoring Tigers having just 7 points. With that being said Savannah State still fought hard making Albany State earn every point. Playing great team defense proved to be beneficial as Savannah State took the lead back several times in the second half.
The second half was filled with several lead changes and also several ties. The game came down to the last position . With the crowd on it’s feet and 10 seconds left the Tigers got the ball in the hands of their leading scorer Marcus Scott , who was able to get off a last-second three which fell short resulting in a court storming moment for Albany State as the Golden Rams kick-off there homecoming with a win.
