ELON, N.C. – For the first time this season the Elon Baseball team was in action welcoming Cincinnati to Latham Park.
Unfortunately for the Phoenix, the recent snowstorm left the field in unplayable conditions causing the series to shift to NC Sate’s Doak Field.
“It was nice to get out,” said Elon head Baseball Coach Mike Kennedy. “Playing against yourself a lot, you get a different opponent so that was nice for our guys, I know they were excited about playing.”
Elon defeated the bearcats 6-5 but not before some late game drama.
The Phoenix led for 8 innings of the game but in the top of the ninth leading 5-2, Elon gave up three runs to Cincinnati, which took the games into extra innings.
“You don’t like to blow leads,” said Kennedy. “You want to try to finish games and close games. You feel a lot better leaving the park when you do that.”
Fortunately for Elon in the bottom of the 10th with a runner on 1st base, sophomore Danny Lynch delivered a walk-off double.
“I am just trying to say humble and calm,” said Elon catcher Danny Lynch. “That is the most important thing to me.
With the win, Elon improves to 11-7 in opening day games under Mike Kennedy.
