Elon, N.C. – With first-year head coach Rich Skrosky on the sideline, Elon kicked off its 2014 football season with a visit to Durham Saturday evening where the Phoenix fell to the Duke Blue Devils 52-13.
The Phoenix (0-1) went three-and-out on the opening series of the game, which Duke (1-0) followed up with an 11-play 61 yard drive to claim a 7-0 lead.
Though Elon would answer on the next drive with a John Gallagher 36-yard field goal, Duke would take command and go into halftime up 28-6.
The Phoenix found the end zone with 10:23 remaining in the game as B.J. Bennett ran the ball in from two yards away to cap an eight-play, 75-yard drive.
Elon quarterback Mike Quinn ended the night with 19 completions on 38 passes for 190 yards.
Defensively for the Phoenix, both Jonathan Spain and Julius Moore posted 10 tackles.
After a bye week, Elon will be in Rhodes Stadium for its home opener on Sept. 13 against North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m.
