The Georgia College softball team was in action this past weekend, playing in the Cougar Classic hosted in Columbus, GA.
Day one of the Classic (Saturday) saw the Bobcats split the two games.
In the first game versus Lincoln Memorial, the Bobcats won 6-2 thanks to a three-run fourth inning and a two-run fifth. GC scored six runs on nine hits, led by 2B Abi LeRoy who finished the game going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Once again, the Bobcats received strong pitching from junior pitcher, Marisa Boyette. Boyette pitched another complete game just allowing two runs on five hits, including striking out an astounding 14 of 26 batters.
The second game, versus Florida Tech, saw the Bobcats win streak snapped. Florida Tech prevailed in a tough matchup 6-5. LF Holland Coursey went 3-for-4 and C Lacey Najafi went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead GC offensively. Carly Lewis pitched a complete game allowing the six runs on seven hits.
Day two (Sunday) saw the Bobcats get back on track and win both games.
Georgia College was set to face Belmont Abbey in the early game. The Bobcats fell behind early, trailing 2-1 after the end of the first inning but would play better as the game went along. After tying it up in the third, and scoring four more to increase their lead in the fourth, GC cruised to the 6-2 victory. The Bobcats scored six runs on just three hits in the ballgame. Kristen Brooks (2), Lacey Najafi (1), Frankie Walls (1), and Carly Lewis (2) all scored for Georgia College. Lewis pitched the complete game, allowing the two runs on just one hit.
Boyette was back on the mound in the evening, as GC faced Tusculum. It was a pitcher’s battle early, neither team allowing a run through the first four innings. But the Bobcats came alive scoring four in the fifth and two in both the sixth and seventh. SS Holland Coursey went 3-for-4, 2B Baylee Hall went 3-for3 with three RBIs, and 1B Frankie Walls went 2-for3 to lead Georgia College to the 8-2 victory. Boyette was once again solid on the mound, pitching the complete game and allowing two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts. Boyette remains undefeated and improves to 8-0.
The Bobcats (11-3) next game will be Friday as they travel to Barry for a doubleheader.
