Jackson, MS- It went down in the Capital City today, The Tigers took on the Braves of Alcorn in the Soul Bowl at the Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The Jackson State Tigers defeated The Braves 24-10,to remain undefeated in the SWAC .
JSU started off kind of slow, Alcorn was able to move the football on its first drive of the second quarter until Jackson State’s defense stopped the rusher short of a first down. The Braves decided to kick the field goal of 32 yards by Noah Kiani.
Shedeur Sanders, was 28-of-39 passing for 297 yards. Keith Corbin III made nine catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
Sanders’ 31-yard touchdown pass to Shane Hooks made it a 10-10 tie in the final minute of the third quarter. Sanders’ 2-yard TD to Corbin gave the Tigers insurance with 3:23 remaining in the game, This led to the overall victory and allowed the Tigers to claim homefield advantage in the SWAC Championship game against Prairie View A&M.
The Tigers (10-1, 8-0 SWAC) victory over Alcorn State (6-4, 5-2) sent the first sellout of the Deion Sanders era into a frenzy. The expected crowd of 58,892 fell short of the JSU home attendance record of 62,512 that was set when Jackson State faced Alcorn in 1996. The stadium record of 63.808 was set by Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State in 1984.
