Last weekend the Mercer Bears won their first Pioneer League Conference game against Drake. The Bulldogs were the first experienced team Mercer has faced, as well as their first Pioneer League opponent. Drake, last year’s conference co-champion, was highly favored.
However, in an exciting game, the Mercer Bears beat the Drake Bulldogs 31-17. One of the most impressive plays of the game was made by defensive back Alex Avant who not only had one of the picks but during the same play he managed to score by weaving in and out of four to five potential tacklers. Bears Quarterback John Russ threw for 172 yards and rushed for 55 to score 21 of the Bears’ points. All together, the bears have had a good season. In addition Mercer, also lead national FCS stats in defense with 209 yards allowed. The team will play its second conference and first away game this coming Saturday against San Diego University. Let’s go Bears!
