The Oglethorpe men’s basketball team is getting set to start the 2014-15 campaign, and
they’ll do so in style with their season opener against Spalding at midnight on Saturday, Nov. 15 (Friday night), the first day of official competition for Division III basketball, in Dorough Field House.
The game will start at the earliest possible time a Division III game can start without a waiver from the NCAA, and is one of two games which will feature a midnight start on the morning of Nov. 15. Daniel
Webster will host Rivier at the same time.
The two games will be the second and third Division III games of the season, as Hampden-Sydney received a waiver to play Coast Guard on national television in the Armed Forces Classic at a Coast Guard air station in Puerto Rico at 1 p.m. ET Friday.
The Petrels are coming off a highly celebrated 21-7 season in which they reached the SAA Championship
and lost a heartbreaker to host Centre in overtime. The season marked the most wins in the Division III
era for the Petrels and saw them make the D3hoops.com Top 25 for the first time, peaking at No. 21.
Spalding is coming off an excellent season themselves, having finished 19-8 and reached the St. Louis
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship before falling to Webster.
The Stormy Petrel Tipoff Classic will feature four teams playing over two nights. The midnight
Oglethorpe-Spalding game will be preceded at 10 p.m. by a battle between NCCAA squads Boyce and
Toccoa Falls. The Petrels will then turn around and play Boyce at 8 p.m. Saturday evening in Day 2 of the event, with Toccoa Falls going up against Spalding at 6 p.m.
