D’Marcus Simonds of Georgia State men’s basketball has been named GSU Student Athlete of the week following a strong week at the Cayman Islands Classic.
Junior D’Marcus Simonds led the Panthers to a third place finish in the Cayman Islands Classic while earning All-Tournament honors last week.
For the week, Simonds averaged 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, to go along with three blocked shots and five steals. Georgia State earned a 10-point win over St. Bonaventure (2018 NCAA Tournament Team) and 24 point-victory over Georgia, while falling to Creighton (2018 NCAA Tournament Team).
Simonds opened the week with 25 points on 11-of-20 shooting with seven rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals in the win over St. Bonaventure to open the Cayman Islands Classic.On Tuesday, he finished with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting, grabbing four rebounds and two steals against Creighton.
He concluded the tournament with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, to go along with eight assists and six rebounds as the Panthers dominated the Bulldogs 91-67.For the season he is averaging a team-best 21.7 points per game, while grabbing 5.2 rebounds and dishing out 3.0 assists per game. He is shooting 45.1 percent from the floor.
The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday on the road at Tulane.
