After leading his team through their transition season into the FBS, head coach Jeff Monken bids the Georgia Southern Eagles goodbye. Although sorry to see him leave, the Eagles are excited to announce that their search for a new head football coach is now over. Willie Fritz was hired to Georgia Southern in early January. He brings with him 30 years of coaching experience.
Fritz, former Sam Houston State head coach, was awarded the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year for the FCS level in 2012, and was recognized as the 2011 American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year. As a head coach, Fritz recorded 176 wins and only 67 losses, totaling him with an average 72.3 winning percentage.
The postseason is where Fritz really shines: two NJCAA National Championships, one bowl game appearance, NCAA Division II Playoffs, Southland Conference Championship, and two NCAA FCS Championship appearances. Fritz has proven his capabilities for leading a team to success for over the past 15 years.
Having FCS coaching experience will benefit Fritz and the Georgia Southern team. Although the Eagles are still transitioning to their FBS recognition, the team couldn’t have asked for a better leader.
