Spring football kicked off this week for the Pirates.
Just like every year the Pirates have said goodbye to seniors past and enter spring 2017 with some new faces as well as some old ones, all in all making up a whole new team.
According to returning wide receiver Jimmy Williams who by the way thought it was pretty cool to say Monday was his last first spring practice says the vibe he’s getting so far from this group of guys is really full of energy and support from each other on both sides of the ball because everyone just wants to get better so the bonding is at an all-time high.
ECU may have had to say goodbye to star wide receiver Zay Jones but the Pirates depth for that position is still looking up. Senior Jimmy Williams was granted another year to play.
Davon Grayson who had to take a medical redshirt last season due to a back injury will also be returning to the field.
Those may be the OG receivers Pirate fans are familiar with but also returning is a sophomore , Deondre Farrier, who began to make a name for himself last year as a freshman with some great plays on Saturdays.
“Everything” was the word Farrier summed up to me to describe what he plans on bringing to the table this year as a player and a teammate.
It will be fun to continue to watch him grow.
It’s only the first week but Coach Scottie Montgomery is impressed with what he is seeing on the defensive side of the ball.
Junior corner Corey Seargent feels confident about the group of guys on his side of the ball this season as well. “We’re young, I feel like we’re faster, we have smarter players, people that want to learn and that’s gonna be good for the long run.”
The Pirates will soon get to put pads on as they gear up to get ready for the Annual Spring Game on April 22nd.
