Kennesaw State University traveled to Campbell University for their homecoming game, and left with a win. The KSU Owls continued their 5 game winning streak with a win over the Camels. This game proved to be a fight on both sides during the first half. Neither team managed to score until halfway through the second quarter when a fumble by KSU’s quarterback, Xavier Shepherd, was returned by Levi Wiggins for a 94-yard touchdown. However, this early touchdown did not set the tone for the rest of the game. The Owls tied the score late in the second quarter after a 75-yard drive resulting in a 3-yard touchdown. For the first time this season, the Owls went on halftime break with a tied up score.
Kennesaw State began the second half with the ball and with a score of 7-7. A 66 yard drive to the Camels’ 29 yard line resulted in a 46-yard field goal by Georgia-born KSU kicker, Nathan Robertson. This field goal put the Owls above the Fighting Camels with a score of 10-7. The Kennesaw State defense continued to hold the Campbell offense, as in the whole game they only racked up 189 total yards…a season low.
The defense flexed its muscles for another game . This the second consecutive game the Owl’s defense has not allowed an offensive score. Evan Thompson, KSU linebacker, led the Owls with his 10 tackles. Chance Bates and Xavier Reddick both earned their first interceptions of the season to stop Campbell’s offense from moving the ball.
The fourth quarter consisted of Campbell being forced into a field goal attempt. KSU defensive lineman, Desmond Scott, broke through the offensive line, and blocked his second kick of this season. The ball was up for grabs, and KSU’s Je’Cory Burks scooped it up, and returned it for 89-yards and a touchdown.
The Owls secured their win when Reddick intercepted the Fighting Camel’s pass attempt on their final drive
of the game. Finally, with 0 seconds left in the game, Xavier Shepherd, KSU’s starting quarterback, connected with freshman running back, Gabriel Benyard, in the end zone. This finalized the score at 30-7 for another Owl victory!
The Owls will be back at home as they will face off with Gardner-Webb on Saturday, October 30th. They will go into this game with a season record of 6-1, a conference record of 3-0, and hoping to add another win under their belt. The game is set for 1:00 pm, and it will be the Owl’s Hall of Fame weekend.
