ROME, Ga. – The Berry College baseball team improved to 14-5 with a 2-1 series victory over visiting Transylvania on Saturday.
The Vikings opened the series with a whopping 22-3 win on Friday setting new program records with 22 hits, 17 RBIs and a new college run record with 22. The relentless offense was led by Sam Joyce, Alex McGill and Will Heard who each had three hits. Pitcher Ben Jernigan improved to 5-1 with his six innings pitched allowing only one hit.
The Pioneers retaliated in game two with a 16-7 win on Saturday to snap the Vikings’ seven game winning streak. Freshman Joey Bell’s first start of the season would land him 0-1 as Transylvania would produce 19 hits with Zach Bynum, Trey Simpson and Aaron Simpson each notching three hits apiece.
Berry answered in game three with a 7-1 win to solidify their fifth straight series victory. Starter TJ Montgomery improved to 3-1 over five innings allowing one earned run and six hits. Game three started out poorly for the Pioneers as Zach Farmer’s single down the left field line in the bottom of the first resulted in a pair of errors by the Pioneers allowing two runs to score and Farmer to make it all the way around off of a single and two errors.
The Vikings head to Covenant College on March 18th before returning home to take on nationally ranked conference rival Birmingham-Southern in a three game series.
