Anderson, S.C. – Anderson (S.C.) scored in four straight innings to defeat GRU Augusta 9-4 March 20.
In the top of the second GRU (11-16) was the first to put points on the scoreboard thanks to a RBI-single out to right field by infielder Chase Lloyd to take a 1-0 led.
Anderson (10-18) was able to respond in the fourth and earn a 2-1 edge. Anderson catcher Jonathan Zalud hit a single up the middle to RBI second base player Brett Cash. Then right fielder Paul Como reached home plate off of a wild pitch.
Due to a critical error by GRU, Anderson was able to build on its lead in the fifth inning and jump out to a 4-1 lead.
Garrett Bernardo, an Anderson infielder, hit a RBI-double up the middle to contribute to the team reaching a comfortable 7-1 advantage in the sixth.
GRU wouldn’t show life again until the top of the eighth, when a home run toward left center by slugger Hunter Boose led to two runs. And a sacrificed bunt by Lloyd resulted in a score for first baseman Conner Gilbert.
Tyler Grooms shouldered most of the work load for the GRU bullpen, pitching in 3.0 innings. Grooms did not have his best performance in allowing two hits, two runs, three walks and only one strikeout.
Anderson pitcher, David Thompson (3-3), started the afternoon, and added another win to his season resume. Thompson pitched for 7.0 innings, during which he gave up seven hits, one run, committed an error and had two strikeouts.
GRU returns to the field for a conference matchup against Georgia College Friday at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
