Bobcats Open Conference Play

SoftballGCvQ0141_thumbThe Bobcats began Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play on Thursday afternoon as they traveled to Georgia Southwestern State University (GSSU) to take on the Surge in a doubleheader. The original start time was delayed due to inclement weather. Despite the rainy conditions, GC remained poised and executed well in both games.

In game one, the Bobcats offense started early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. A single by Abi LeRoy scored Kristin Brooks who had led off the game by being hit by a pitch before swiping second base. LeRoy would also score in the inning off of a throwing error by GSSU.

LeRoy led the team going 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored, while Kristen Brooks also added to the Bobcat hit column, (totaling six), going 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.

In a game where neither team reached double digits in the hit column, it was no surprise for the opposition as the Georgia College ace, Marisa Boyette, was on the mound. Boyette pitched a complete game allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out ten batters. She improves her conference leading record to 11-0 in a 5-2 Bobcat victory.

Game two saw the Bobcats in a tougher situation. After scoring one run in both the fourth and fifth inning and giving up two in the bottom of the fifth, GC came up to bat in the top of the seventh inning with the game tied 2-2.

However, two doubles in the inning would propel GC to the lead and eventual victory. Tatiana Nettles (2-for-2, 2 RBIs) and Lacey Najafi (1-for-4, 1 RBI) both hit RBI doubles to put their teams ahead.

Carly Lewis would shut the door in the bottom of the seventh. Lewis pitched the complete seven, allowing just two runs on four hits, improving her season record to 8-3.

Georgia College sweeps their first conference matchup and improves their overall record to 19-3 on the season. Their next doubleheader matchup is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. for Have a Heart Day at the Peeler Complex as they will take on Fort Valley State.
