ELON, N.C. — After starting their 2014 season with nine consecutive road games where they traveled to tournaments across the country, the Elon Phoenix Softball team finally returned home to Hunt Softball Park to host a tournament of their own.
“We’ve been traveling a lot so we were ready to be home,” said Elon softball head coach Kathy Bocock. “You could see by the way we played, we had some really good competition in this weekend so it was a great tournament all the way around.”
The Phoenix Opening Tournament featured five different teams: Niagara, Saint Joseph’s, Maryland Baltimore County, Iona, and Elon.
“It is definitely a lot of fun to play different people,” said Elon pitcher Chelsea White. “It was nice to get experience from different games and learn from different people. Playing the same person can get kind of boring but it is still a challenge.”
The Phoenix won three out of four games on the weekend moving them to 8-4-1 on the season. Coach Bocock hopes her team can build on the experience they gained from the weekend.
“One of the reasons we do the tournament early in the season is so that we can get a lot of the girls to see where they are,” said Bocock. “We play double-headers in the SoCon and once we get into our conference we play two games back to back on Saturdays, so we need to get ourselves ready to go for that.”
Elon will open up Southern Conference play on March 15 against Western Carolina.
