ELON, N.C. – Competing in Elon University’s first official game as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, the women’s soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over visiting Jacksonville State in front of a packed home crowd.
Elon freshman Grace Bennett put the Phoenix on the board in the 10th minute with an early goal and which proved to be all that Elon needed.
In the 2nd half, Elon added one more goal in the 66th minute. A brilliant free kick by Mel Insley found the back of the net putting the Phoenix up 2-0, which would stand to be the final.
The Phoenix defense was stellar throughout the game limiting chances for the Gamecocks all night long. Sydney Branson started in goal for the Phoenix in the first half and senior Kate Murphy took the 2nd half. Branson earned the win and ended the night with two saves, while Murphy finished with one save in the match’s final half.
Next up for the Phoenix: On Sunday Elon welcomes former conference rival Appalachian State to Rudd Field for a 2 p.m. kick.
