Tuesday, September 10, the Eagles hosted the University of Georgia Bulldogs in the volleyball home opener. First-year head coach, Dustin Wood, hoping to make an impact against the Bulldogs, set his sights for a win at home.
The Eagles slipped in the first set 1-5, but quickly gained points with kills from Juniors Kym Coley and Jamie DeRatt, making the score 13-15. After several rallies, the Bulldogs pulled ahead and took the first set 25-18.
The Bulldogs continued to dominate in the last two sets, with the score for the second one 25-14 and the third one 25-13.
The match, however, wasn’t all bad for the Eagles. During the game, Sophomore Alexandra Beecher recorded a match-high 17 digs and Coley led the Eagles with 10 kills for the night, with DeRatt following a close second with eight kills.
Even though the home opener for the Eagles did not turn out as planned, the turnout for the game was still impressive. With a live band, raffle and half-time show, the game was an entertaining spectacle for all who attended.
