ROME, GA – Vikings midfielder Josh Hughes led the team by scoring all five goals in the 5-0 win over Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.
The win put the Vikings in the midst of a three-way tie atop the Southern Athletic Association standings. Oglethorpe and Millsaps College are also in the running with a conference record of 4-1-1.
Hughes scored all of his goals in the first half, as he was benched for all of the second half. His career performance came on Berry College’s Senior Day, a day in which senior athletes are recognized for their athletic and academic accomplishments.
“It was awesome scoring five goals for the fans and especially my parents. They come to every game… and to give back to them was a great experience for me,” Hughes said.
Head coach Richard Vardy said that the win came from a stellar performance by the entire team in addition to Hughes capitalizing on solid passing from his teammates.
“We’re happy for him, and I know he will remember it for a long, long time. When you graduate and move on from playing soccer at college, it’s not so much the trophies and everything else, it’s those memories and I think today he’s got a lot of memories and he will look back very fondly of today,” Vardy said.
The Vikings finish out the SAA regular season at Oglethorpe College on Saturday, Nov. 2.
