With the departure of Steve Buckley last month, Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken named Jon Williams as the new Assistant Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel.
Coming from Itawamba Community College, Williams spent three years as an offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the Indians before taking over as the school’s 10th head coach in 2009. Last year, he led ICC to its first 5-0 start in school history and highest ranking in the NJCAA Poll at No. 4.
The Panama City, Fla., native finished his career with the Indians at 21-16, three runner-up positions in the MACJC North Division and one playoff appearance.
Williams said he is thrilled and excited to work with the Southern Miss staff.
“The opportunity to work on at the FBS level and a program with such a rich tradition was too good to pass up,” Williams stated. “I believe in Coach Monken and his vision for where the program needs to be and his plan to follow in order to get there.”
In addition, Williams served as the offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and the head coach for strength and conditioning at Mississippi College for six years. He has also worked with staff from Wayne County and Simpson High Schools and East Central Community College.
“We are pleased to have Jon join our staff,” Monken said. “We look forward to him directing our efforts in bringing in future Golden Eagles as well as mentoring our current players.”
Williams is a 1996 graduate of Wingate University.
