Pirate Nation welcomed 22 new members on National Signing Day 2016. 11 players are said to be contributing factors on defense while the other 11 will be new additions to the Pirate offense.
The Pirates signed and gained three linemen, three linebackers as well as five secondaries. As for the offense, they gained five linemen, two running backs, one wide receiver, one quarterback and two tight ends.
First year head coach Scottie Montgomery worked on adding personnel, weight, and size on both sides of the ball. Coach Mo, as the players call him, spoke on how social media really helped with this 2016 recruiting class.
Also, sticking with the theme of family and character former head Coach Ruff had instilled in the program. Coach Mo said he would not budge when it came to the quality of people these 2016 signees are, and that the atmosphere and family feeling of The Pirate Nation was a huge selling point no other school could compete with.
11 of the signees came from right here in North Carolina. A handful of names came from Pitt County high school where I actually had the pleasure of watching them play this past football season such as 6’ DB Keyshawn Canady and 6’ 2” LB Kendrall Futrell.
The Pirates will be entering their third year in the American Athletic Conference.
