Disclaimer, this is strictly my opinion.
The last few home games have not been the Pirate Nation I am used to. Aside from the UConn game where we were able to defeat the Huskies 41-3 as well as the NC State game where we also grabbed an at home win, the energy in Dowdy has been disappointing.
Getting to watch a football game from the sidelines is incredible and there is nothing like it. Seeing the energy and fans all piled into one place is such a good feeling, it makes the game exciting, it makes the media members excited, and most importantly it makes the players excited.
But, I personally have not felt the same Pirate Nation vibe since the NC State game early in the season.
Yes, anyone who has been watching the Pirates this year would agree this has by far not been the best season but the fans are a big part of game day. Pirate Nation is a big part of this community.
Freshman year before I got involved with the media, I used to proudly go to every game and stay till the end of the game win or lose.
I feel like as a fan of any team, isn’t that what you do? Ride or die no matter what?
I cannot begin to explain how it feels when the energy literally gets sucked out of Dowdy as fans dwindle with every quarter. You can feel the shift from the stands to the field to the bench.
It’s disheartening to look up and see a pretty much empty stadium. The players understand they aren’t really giving the fans many reasons to stay and watch, but with that being said, doesn’t ECU pride them-selves on having the best fans in the nation?
It would just be nice to see even ½ of the fan base at the end of the game as are there for kick-off no matter what the score is!
The Pirates still have one home game left this season against Navy November 19th at 4pm. (Finally, not a noon kickoff) Let’s hope for a win and a full crowd till the last seconds.
