A big question mark is lingering over the running back position right now as far as who will line up with the number ones in the fall.

It’s only week two but there seems to be a pretty tight competition at that position between senior Anthony Scott, juniors Derrell Scott and Devin Anderson, and even sophomore Hussein Howe.

From that list, Howe is one of the names Pirate Nation hasn’t heard as much about. But, you can rest assured he is catching Coach Scottie Montgomery’s eye this spring. “You know he doesn’t look like a sophomore right now he looks like a guy that has been in the system.”

Howe said himself that he is feeling more confident this year now that he has had time to learn the playbook 100%.

Coach Mo is impressed with what he’s seen so far by everyone over these last days of practice. “The competition level in the room as finally risen to one level, I think all of them are in the top right now.”

Even though the competition is there, Howe says all the guys remain supportive of each other and cheer each other on when either of them are up.

Howe even referred to this group of backs as a whole as, “The best in the nation.”

If you kept up with Pirate football last year or even tuned in for a one game it was obvious the Pirates had ball security issues when running the ball.

Running backs coach Jason Nichols has really been working on ball security drills with the guys to decrease the number of fumbles seen this year.

The competition is sure to heat up even more as the Pirates prepare for the Spring Game on April 22nd.
