On Wednesday, January 16th, the Reinhardt Men’s basketball team traveled to Columbia, SC for an AAC matchup against the Yellow Jackets of Allen University. Reinhardt came into the contest with an 8-12 record, 6-6 in the AAC. Reinhardt had won the previous matchup between the two teams earlier in the season, but Wednesday’s night game went to the home team of the Yellow Jackets won the contest.
The Yellow Jackets got out to a fast start going on a 12-2 run to open the game. The run helped them gain momentum over the Eagles leading 32-25 with 4:24 left to play in the first half. The Yellow Jackets would then go on a 13-4 run to end the first half leading 45-29 over the Eagles. The home team would continue their success from the first half and go on to outscore Reinhardt 56-48 in the second half to pull away big and win by 24.
Reinhardt scoring was led by three players that were in double digits, Samuel Bunkley with 16 points, Latroy Strong with 15 points, and James Jackson III with 11 points. Allen’s shooting parentage finished at 60.7 percent from the field and 5-8 from behind the three-point line. The Eagles struggled behind the three-point line making only 5 of 24 attempts. Overall, Reinhardt shot 45.8 percent from the field. On the defensive side of the ball, Bunkley had three steals while Latroy hauled in a team-best nine rebounds.
The men’s basketball team will be back in action looking to get back in the win column on Saturday, January 19th, at Tennessee Wesleyan, at 4:00 pm.
