Georgia College softball is off to an incredible start. Earning the fifteenth spot in the national rankings, the Bobcats came into the day with a record of 15-3 and winners of six straight. They looked to improve on this record as the Delta State Statesman were in town for another doubleheader.
Game one was an extra inning thriller. It took eight innings to decide this one, as the seventh inning was completed in a 2-2 tie. Not very much offense took place for either team. Georgia College saw doubles by Abi LeRoy and Taylor Campbell. Locked in a stalemate during the bottom of the eighth inning the deciding run came on a perfectly executed squeeze play initiated by Abi LeRoy at the plate. LeRoy, batting from the left side, pulled a perfect drag bunt down the first base line allowing Kristen Brooks to slide in safe at the plate.
The game displayed confident and effective pitching for both teams. For Delta State, Katie Justice threw seven-and-a-third innings and allowed just three runs (one earned) on five hits. But in a duel of aces, GC pitcher Marisa Boyette came out on top with the win. Boyette was once again masterful, throwing the complete eight innings and allowing only two runs on five hits as well as striking out eight batters. Her ERA now improves to 1.44 on the season as she notches her tenth win on the season, remaining undefeated.
Game two was much more in favor of the Bobcats. The reigning PBC Player of the Week, Carly Lewis, was on the mound for GC. Lewis was dominant throughout. With an impressive line, seven innings pitched and just one run (in the fourth) on five hits, Lewis improved her record to 7-3 on the season.
Contrary to the first game, the Bobcat’s bats were hot. Led by first baseman Faith Flanders (1-for-4, HR & 3 RBI), designated hitter Taylor Campbell (2-for-4, 2 RBI), and Abi LeRoy (1-for-3, 2 RBI), Georgia College put up four runs in the first inning, one in the second, and three more in the sixth to cruise to the 8-1 victory.
The Bobcats notched their seventeenth victory on the season and their eighth in a row. Their next game will be an away contest as they travel to take on Georgia Southwestern on Thursday for another doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
