Elon, N.C. – It was family weekend at Elon University and the men in maroon and gold put on a show for the 11,203 fans, the 3rd largest crowd in Rhodes Stadium history.
The game came down to the last play; with no time left and down by 7, Charlotte heaved the ball to the end zone and came down with what appeared to be a game-tying touchdown. However, a penalty was called on the play, which resulted in a loss of down, and the game was called final.
Charlotte (3-1) struck first when Matt Johnson connected on a 19-yard TD pass to Austin Duke in the first quarter. The Phoenix answered with a touchdown, the first touchdown allowed by Charlotte in the first half this season.
Elon (1-2) would not trail for the rest of the game and take its first lead on a John Gallagher field goal with 11:49 left in the 3rd quarter to put Elon up 10-7.
After a slew of field goals, the score was locked at 13-13 going into the fourth quarter. With 3:57 left, Quinn found Kierre Brown on a 5-yard slant to put the phoenix up 20-13 and that would stand as the final score.
The Phoenix was able to gain 454 yards of total offense on the night. Mike Quinn completed 43 of 59 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, B.J. Bennett and Tracey Coppedge both rushed for 83 yards.
The Phoenix will hit the road next Saturday to face fifth-ranked Coastal Carolina in a 7 p.m. game.
