Georgia State Volleyball will welcome Appalachian State tomorrow at 7:00 pm in the GSU Sports Arena to kick off the 2018 Sun Belt slate. The contest will begin a 16 game stretch against Sun Belt foes to close out the regular season, nine of which will be played at the GSU Sports Arena.
GSU enters the weekend with a 3-7 record, but is coming off a strong 3-1 victory at Presbyterian College last Friday. The Mountaineers will bring an 8-4 record with them into Sun Belt play, winning matches against Furman and Winthrop last weekend.
The match will present a contrast in styles, as Georgia State ranks in the top half of the Sun Belt in opponent hitting percentage and digs per set while App State is second in the conference in kills per set and offensive hitting percentage. Both teams feature a strong senior setter, as Appalachian State’s Becky Porter and GSU’s Sarah Renner are both ranked among Sun Belt leaders in assists per set.
Renner’s 227 assists and 8.41 assists per set are good for sixth in the Sun Belt. Coming off a 17-kill performance against Presbyterian, Crystal Lee is now ranked ninth in the conference with 95 kills, 2.75 per set. Fellow senior, Shae Chapman has become a force at the net with 15 blocks in the Panthers’ last four matches.
Tomorrow night will mark the 14th meeting between the Sun Belt foes with GSU leading the all-time series 7-6.
